Union gathers
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 86D met Thursday at the Muscatine American Legion. Meetings were held at 4 and 7:30 p.m. About 360 people, including about 300 union members, were locked out of Grain Processing Corp. on Aug. 22, 2008, after the union and company failed to reach a five-year contract agreement. Unemployment benefits will begin ending on Saturday for most of the locked-out workers. If the state-wide unemployment rate rises above 4 percent, they can reapply for a benefit extension.
